Understanding Breast Implants

A breast augmentation is a surgical prosthesis utilized to alter the shape, size, and firmness of a woman’s breasts. In reconstructive cosmetic surgery, breast augmentation implants are typically placed in order to correct deformities and defects of the breast structure after a mastectomy. Some women choose to retain their natural breasts by using a silicone implant, but the benefits of these silicone implants are that they tend to dry out over time, they are uncomfortable and often uncomfortable to wear, and they cannot mimic the natural look of a natural breast. Many women prefer to retain their natural bust size with breast augmentation implants. These breast enhancement implants are surgically implanted into the breast tissue via incisions inside the areola. Some patients require an additional surgery known as a subareolar placement which allows for placement of the breast enhancement implants on an area just below the armpit.
